BUTOH WORKSHOP WITH KATSURA KAN HOSTED BY VANGELINE THEATER IN NEW YORK

Katsura Kan is a Japanese choreographer, dancer, art director and instructor, currently based in Kyoto, Japan. He began his Butoh career as a Butoh dancer with the Japanese group Byakkosha in 1979. He founded the multinational Dance Company "Katsura Kan & Saltimbanques" in 1986. Since then, Katsura Kan been leading research projects funded by the Japan Foundation with asian artists and have held the international workshop festival "Harvesting Beauty in the field" in Kyoto (1991~94); in 1997, he moved to Bangkok to collaborate with contemporary asian theatre. In 2001, he started a research project about "minorities" with the intention to collaborate with dancers in Bosnia, Serbia and Greece. He is currently working on a Samuel Beckett text called "Beckett Butoh Notation" in Paris, France and Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
"Surrealism of Flesh 2012"
"Butoh" has an intention "To create something that can not be named on stage" therefore, instead of expressing something by body, "Butoh" performs this mysterious "body" itself.
