East Coast Tribal is a movement discipline, a dance-style, and a perspective: grounded in Bellydance, with influences of Hip hop, Modern Dance, and Martial Arts. East Coast Tribal does not claim tradition or even innovation. It simply presents itself as an honest expression and response to current times, emotions, and influences. East Coast Tribalists practice a conscious rebellion from Orientalism as a means of respect for the cultures of which Bellydance has risen, cultures of which many modern Bellydancers could never truly claim to represent. East Coast Tribalists seek to depart from tradition, borders, rivers, disciplines, definitions, trends, and labels. Tribalistas seek mastery of tools for expression through physical movement, reaching for a new language, and how to speak this language, which is non-verbal, using the body as it's medium. Bellydance is the root form of expression of East Coast Tribal, as Bellydance holds the story of the body and the history of women, and is a powerful means of healing and celebrating life, and improving the physical well-being. East Coast Tribalistas use performance as a means of self-confrontation and celebration, creating a marker in the dancers timeline as a reminder of strengths. East Coast Tribal was first showcased in the 2006 release of the instructional Bellydance DVD, East Coast Tribal, produced by World Dance New York, this dance style is given it's name through performances by Solstice Dance Ensemble, led by choreographer Sera Solstice, and the instruction offered at Solstice Studio in New York City. Musical collaborations are a distinctive element of East Coast Tribal, with artists of Sub Swara, Djinn, and Chronomad. East Coast Tribal performances are usually highly choreographed, and are approached as a language form. Dancers continuously search for new ways to reflect their world, both outside and inside, through performance. Movements are typically bold, aggressive, expansive, contrasting with pop'n lock elements.

**Teen Bellydance at Solstice Studio
We have talked for a long time about how we want to get more young people involved in Bellydance. We have two awesome instructors and a great space to support our teen dancers. Do you know any teens who would like to take a bellydance class? East Coast Tribal Style of course! Tribal Teens Move with mystery, beauty, and strength in this bellydance class reserved just for teens (ages 12-20 years). Instructors Angelys and Heather bring experience in teaching dance to young adults, drawing from Tribal Fusion bellydance, Hip Hop, and Modern dance. Develop grace, posture, strength and self-confidence. Learn a fun choreography that you can perform with/for your friends. Instructors request full 5-week enrollment in order to teach a choreography. Make-up class options are available in the case of absences. Please enroll at info@boldbellydance.com
***Childrens movement classes are intended for girls and boys who are interested in dance, and for parents who want to provide an activity that will allow their kids to learn through fun exercise and movement. We at Solstice Studio, feel there are some key elements that kids can begin learning to develop dance basics, but more importantly, we must preserve the spirit of the individual expression through movement. Our classes celebrate the individual and encourage self-expression through movement. We introduce ways to move, but do not base dance ability upon skill, but rather upon willingness to express ones self via movement. It is also our intention to keep the class moving and provide a good work-out. We will start and finish the class with basic stretching and light yoga.
*Technique Classes are the center of our dance program at Solstice Studio. It is here that the dancer builds stamina, Bellydance movement, East Coast Tribal Styling, and integration of steps into dance-movement. Technique classes share a curriculum, common goal, and methods for expanding the movement capacity of the body.
**Specialty classes are meant to supplement the dancers' training. The specialty classes are additions to the program at Solstice Studio, meant to to add further depth to your core training.
What style of bellydance is this? This is not your traditional bellydance that you may see in a restaurant, (although many of our instructors are originally trained in this style: Egyptian, Turkish, and American Cabaret). Our style is called East Coast Tribal. It falls under the "Tribal Fusion" umbrella of Modern Bellydance. Check out this video to see if this is the style that you are interested in (made by core members of our studio):
