"The AI is very cheap somtimes"
Despite the downfall of the 3D Mortal Kombat games like Deception and Deadly Alliance ( I havn't played the Armaggedon one yet). Mortal Kombat II was the best one in Arcades and for home consoles back in 1993. Those days were fantastic, fighting games and beat em up's were above the crowds at that time. Mortal Kombat II was also competing against Street Fighter II and won the war against it.

In MKII you can choose from 12 characters with 6 of them being new (Reptile, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena,Baraka, and Shang Tsung). Of course if you are wondering if the original cast returned from the first game, yes they are also in there as well. You can also unlock a hidden character (only by putting in the cheat code).

MKII improved over the first game, allowing you to do more fatalities, lots of more blood, and the pace is quite fast this time. Unlike Street Fighter games, MKII constantly brought somthing new with every series, except the 3D games for the newer systems are all the same.

Invironments are dark, scary, and bloody. You can knock your opponant off a ledge into a pit of spikes, or you can upper them up into a ceiling of spikes. Either way your bound to find a new way to kill someone in the end. The announcer makes himself quite clear when he tells you to "FINISH HIM" or "FINISH HER."

Most people had a problem with the cast of characters because all of them looked exacally like (the ninjas). Unfornatly I liked the idea of how Midway introduced a few extra ninja's into the game. Sure they looked alike but their moves were different. Scorpion is the only one who can shoots a hook into your chest, Sub-Zero is the only ice ninja, Reptile uses acid, and the two female ninja's are also different. This is what made the game so interesting. Street Fighter did the same thing, they have a dozen characters that fight almost like Ryu and Ken with some exception.

For me MKII was the best one midway created. Not just because of the fame and popularity the game recieved due to all the violence and mayhem it brought into the arcades. But the game was actually somthing different, it had what other fighters didn't have....."potential." As a child I wasn't allowed to play video games like this, or even watch other people play them. Likewise I use to sneak over to my cousins house and go in his room, lock the door, put in Mortal Kombat II and play the hell out of that game. It was addictive and became my favorite MK fighter ever since then.

With a solid fighting system, mature content, a series of interesting characters there is noway I could ignore my blood lust to enjoy this game. In the Arcades people spent half of their paychecks playing Mortal Kombat II just as much as the first one. It was a cult classic and reigned over Street Fighter II with an iron fist.

However this is a very challenging game, the boss is a push over and can deal out some serious damage with his sledge hammer. There is no hard or easy mode, so you'll have to spend some time using your skills to out best the strong AI. Somtimes the AI can be extremelly cheap when you get a little further into the game. I often got slammed from 1 feet away even though I wasnt close enough.

Still MK II is a great game to own in your collection.
