"Worthy of conqueroring the streets"
Streets of Rage was the very first beat em up game for consoles to start the empire of side scroller action. While the arcades were booming with fighting games by now, people at home would also have somthing exciting to enjoy.
In 1991 Sega Genesis was finally earning its reputation for being the #1 system in America if you loved beat em ups. Super Nintendo was for suitable for fighting games, and adventure. Sega was more about gore, and violence.
The game was released when Nintendo's SNES was imminent, and Sega needed exclusive games to rival the SNES. They needed a game similar to Capcom's Final Fight, a successful and popular arcade game. As such, Streets of Rage is very similar to Final Fight. A key selling points was that it supported 2 players, a feature omitted from the SNES port of Final Fight which only had one player.
The game and its successors would all sport a soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro based on various styles of European techno music. And yes Streets Of Rage had great music, even the soundtrack was worthy.
Introduction:
The story resembles a typical 1980s street cop movie. The unnamed city is under the control of a crime syndicate, run by the series' main villain Mr. X. With the local government and police force under his control, crime runs rampant. Having had their request for a special unit to combat the trouble turned down by their corrupt superiors, three young police officers (Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Adam Hunter) resign from the police force and fight the syndicate on their own.
So basically this is a beat em up game with a nice story line, if you have seen that TV show (21 Jump street) that aired in the 1980'sand early 1990's you will get the idea of what Streets Of Rage was all about.
The gameplay for Streets Of Rage is very simple, anyone can learn how to play this game withen a matter of seconds. Your main goal is to progress down an Urban city of thugs and constantly beat the snot out of them by pushing the "B button to punch." You can use special moves by pressing "A" to summon the police that will pull up in a car and rain a fire storm of bullets down on the enemy taking them all out in one hit ( doesnt work on bosses ). The "C button" is to jump, there is no block or running so this game can feel rather slow somtimes.
Boss fights can be simple or hard depending on the difficulty level. Somtimes the enemies can come from both sides and smash your face in until your dead. Streets of Rage is more fun on 2 player mode, but it can also be just as fun on 1 player as well.
There are 8 stages in the game. I personally liked the first stage the best.
